Senators debated Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) Audit the Fed bill, which would repeal restrictions on Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviews of the Federal Reserve Bank’s monetary policy decisions and give the GAO access to board members' communications about setting interest rates.

In this portion of debate, Senator Patrick Toomey (R-PA) said the central bank’s monetary policy was stuck in 2008, despite the financial crisis of 2008 having been over for years. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) said that while he was in the House, he learned from former Representative Ron Paul why more accountability was needed at the Fed. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said the bill would expose the Fed’s monetary policy decisions to political pressure from 535 members of Congress. close
