Officers of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and other mayors spoke to reporters at the beginning of the U.S. Conference of Mayors winter meeting to present their agenda, “The 2016 Compact for a Better America: A Call to Action.” They urged presidential candidates and Congress to realize the importance of cities and spoke about issues including the criminal justice system, transportation, and infrastructure. Among the speakers was the mayor of Flint, Michigan, who talked about the water contamination crisis in her community. During this event, a protester with the group Black Lives Matter held a sign in front of the mayors, periodically interrupting, and later spoke to reporters about holding government accountable concerning the policing in black communities. close
