The commission heard testimony from Charleston and South Carolina officials on the slated closure of a military installation in Charleston. The hearing was the first of a series of field hearings the commission will hold to hear testimony from the general public on the impact of the closures on local communities. The commission is expected to issue recommendations to Congress later in the year on the list of base closures submitted by Secretary of Defense Aspin earlier in the year. The commission heard presentations justifying keeping the Charleston Naval Yard open, and refuting arguments supporting the base closure. close
