The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Williams v. Pennsylvania, docket number 15-5040. The case concerns when judges must step down from hearing issues before them. Terrance Williams challenged his death sentence on alleged prosecutorial misconduct and asked Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Castille to recuse himself. Justice Castille was the district attorney whose office prosecuted the case in 1986. The chief justice refused to step down, voting to overturn a lower court’s ruling granting Terrance Williams a new sentencing hearing. close
