John Steele Gordon talked about his book Washington’s Monument: And the Fascinating History of the Obelisk, in which he provides a history of the Washington Monument. First conceived as an obelisk by architect Robert Mills in 1838, the monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885. In his book, the author reports that at 555 feet it is the tallest stone structure in the world. close
