Several presentations and speakers commemorated National African-American History Month, including remarks by the director of the National Park Service, the unveiling of a commemorative Black History stamp, and a keynote address by Professor Karsonya Wise Whitehead. 2016 marked the 90th Annual Black History Luncheon held by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Historian, author, and journalist Carter G. Woodson founded the organization in 1915, and in 1926 he initiated “Negro History Week,” the precursor to Black History Month. close
