1960 Presidential Primary Debate
Five weeks before the primary, polls showed Senator Kennedy trailing by 20 points, with West Virginia voters expressing concerns about his Roman Catholic religion. Senator Kennedy was able to make the race about religious tolerance and the separation of church and state, and won with 60 percent of the vote on his way to securing the nomination. He went on to defeat Vice President Richard Nixon in the general election.

Senators John F. Kennedy (D-MA) and Hubert Humphrey (D-MN) participated in the 1960 West Virginia Democratic primary debate. This was only the second televised presidential primary debate in history, and took place at the WCHS-TV studios in Charleston.
