Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) responded indirectly to Minority Leader Harry Reid’s previous-day criticism of his decision to not hold confirmation hearings on a nominee to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia until a new president was in office. Minority Whip Richard Durbin (D-IL) followed, saying that Republicans did not believe President Obama had the same full authority as other presidents, and that Republicans were ignoring the Constitution. Former Judiciary Committee Chair Orrin Hatch (R-UT) defended Senator Grassley, saying Senator Reid’s language was inappropriate for the Senate floor. He also defended the Republican strategy, arguing that it was nothing unusual and citing examples. close
