Witnesses testified at a hearing on the FBI’s demand that Apple assist in unlocking an iPhone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack. In the first panel, FBI Director James Comey answered questions about the FBI’s ability to investigate the contents of smartphones and other devices and how the needs of law enforcement are evolving along with technology. In the second panel, representatives of technology companies Apple and Google described their concerns over complying with law enforcement investigative requests, and the Manhattan district attorney testified on behalf of the National District Attorneys Association. close
