Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee talked with reporters following a meeting with President Obama at the White House. The senators talked with the president about the process for nominating a new Supreme Court justice. This meeting came following a committee meeting where Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and other Republicans vowed to not take up a nominee until after the presidential election. Democratic members said that it was part of the Senate’s constitutional duty. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that while they did not discuss names of nominees with the president, they did talk about the type of nominee. Senator Schumer said the ideal candidate would have outstanding credentials and could gain bipartisan support. close
