Secretary John Kerry announced that the State Department believes ISIS* has carried out genocide against multiple ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq and Syria. The secretary gave specific examples regarding Yazidis, Turkmen, and Christians in Mosul. Congress passed legislation last year requiring the Obama administration to determine whether ISIS was committing genocide by March 17, 2016. The House of Representatives also unanimously passed a resolution earlier that week deeming ISIS’s actions genocide.
