Cragg Hines of the Houston Chronicle and Carl Leubsdorf of the Dallas Morning News discussed the race for the Texas Senate seat vacated by Senator Lloyd Bentsen, who was named Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton administration. The current holder of the seat, Senator Bob Krueger, will meet Republican challenger Kay Bailey Hutchison, who finished first in the special election weeks earlier. The two candidates will compete in a runoff election because neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote. The program included television campaign commercials by both candidates. close
