First lady Michelle Obama delivered the commencement address to the 2016 graduating class of historically black Jackson State University. Mrs. Obama spoke about the school’s segregated past, and spoke out against Mississippi’s controversial religious freedom law. She told students that if they did not exercise their right to vote much of the progress on civil rights would be under threat. Mrs. Obama said that in the 2015 mid-term election, African-American youth turnout was less than 20 percent. The commencement ceremony was held at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. close
