After introductory remarks presentations and panel discussions were held: “Notes on the Color of Surveillance” by Alvaro Bedoya; “Surveillance in the Slave Era” by Simone Browne; “Watching Back: There’s an App for That” by Brandon Anderson and Anthony Cook; “Surveillance of Low-Income Communities” by Khiara Bridges, Hamid Khan, and Robert Patterson; and “The ‘Negro Subversion’ Division: Early 20th Century Surveillance” by David Levering Lewis.

A day-long conference was held examining historical and current perspectives of surveillance of black communities. Speakers included Pulitzer Prize-winner David Levering-Lewis talking about the history of surveillance of African Americans for signs of subversion from slavery to the present-day Black Lives Matters movement.
