Congressional leaders presented the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers. The regiment was composed of Puerto Rican service members and was the last segregated unit of the U.S. military to be deactivated. The medal was awarded for its pioneering military service, devotion to duty, and many acts of valor in the face of adversity. The regiment served on the battlefield during World War II and in Korea. Former Borinqueneers Sergeant Major Jose Colon and Colonel Manuel Siverio accepted the medal for the 65th Infantry Regiment. The ceremony included the U.S. Army Color Guard, the national anthem and other music by the U.S. Army Band and Chorus, and invocations. close
