Obama administration officials, journalists, business leaders, and economists discussed the economic consequences of the criminal justice system. A panel analyzed data from a report by the Council of Economic Advisers on the impact of mass incarceration. White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said criminal justice reform needed to start with rebuilding the communities most affected. Additionally, she said inmates should receive treatment for mental health issues, and get job training. Ms. Jarrett said those steps were key to reducing the recidivism rate. The Department of Justice designated the week of April 24-30, 2016, as National Reentry Week.
