A discussion by the Senate majority and minority leaders on fiscal year 2017 federal spending turned into a debate on funding to deal with the Zika virus in the U.S. The pending bill provided funds for federal energy and water projects across the country. Senators also focused on an amendment dealing with the U.S. buying Iran’s heavy water used in nuclear reactors. Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Democrats to “do their job” and vote on the amendment despite the president’s threatened veto. Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) responded by saying Republicans were trying to embarrass the president and were refusing to deal with the Zika virus issue. close
