Betrayal at Little Gibraltar William Walker talked about his book Betrayal at Little Gibraltar: A German Fortress, a Treacherous American General, and the Battle to End World War I, in which he recalls America’s 1918 offensive against Germany’s base at Montfaucon, France. The heavily fortified location, dubbed “Little Gibraltar,” was difficult to attack, due largely to Major General Robert E. Lee Bullard’s refusal to follow orders to assist in the offensive. The battle, the bloodiest in U.S. history, resulted in 122,000 casualties. close
