House Armed Services Chair Mac Thornberry (R-TX) talked about the National Defense Authorization Act, passed by the House earlier that week, and issues associated with it such as the debate over ISIS* and LGBT rights. Topics included what to expect when the Senate debates defense spending in the coming week and a veto threat by President Obama. The bill calls for $610 billion for the Pentagon. It includes a military pay raise greater than the White House request and it shifts about $18 billion from a war-funding account into the base defense budget in order to improve military readiness. The bill also restricts transfers of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. mainland, blocks possible new base closures, and requires the National Security Adviser be confirmed if the staff is over 100 people.
