A House subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee held a hearing on proposed changes to the American With Disabilities Act to address the issue of lawsuits against retail stores, rental establishments, or other facilities used by the general public. Speakers included two U.S. representatives sponsoring separate bills aimed at preventing lawsuit abuses by requiring notification to individuals and businesses to allow them time to comply with the law. Other witnesses included a retail shop manager and hotel owner who described the lawsuits filed against them, and a representative of an independent living organization who opposes changes to the ADA. close
