The case caught the attention of civil rights lawyer Morris Dee, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who argued that the United Klans of America, the largest Klan organization at that time with branches in 25 states, should be held with conspiracy in the murder. Mr. Dee’s civil suit on behalf of the victim’s mother resulted in a $7 million judgement that destroyed the UKA and set a precedent for use in combating other hate groups.
