Following leader remarks and a period of morning business, senators were to vote on the motion to proceed to H.R. 2578, a commerce, justice, and science appropriations bill. Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT) interrupted debate on the spending bill at 11:21 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to discuss gun control loopholes with colleagues in the wake of the June 12, 2016, mass shooting at an Orlando, Florida, gay nightclub. His filibuster lasted 14 hours and 50 minutes. During that time Senator Murphy was joined by some 40 other senators, mostly Democrats. close
