Mr. Bernstein, who was arrested outside of Mae West’s apartment in Los Angeles, had promised to ship the Nazis 35 tons of Canadian nickel. When the shipment arrived in Germany, it contained only scrap metal and tin. Mr. Shapiro reports that the actions of his notorious great-uncle, who also made a name for himself as a card-shark and vaudeville manager, hampered the Nazi’s war preparations.
