Walter Shapiro talked about his book Hustling Hitler: The Jewish Vaudevillian Who Fooled the Führer, in which he remembers his great-uncle Freeman Bernstein, who was arrested on February 18, 1937, for grand larceny against the Nazi government. Mr. Bernstein, who was arrested outside of Mae West’s apartment in Los Angeles, had promised to ship the Nazis 35 tons of Canadian nickel. When the shipment arrived in Germany, it contained only scrap metal and tin. Mr. Shapiro reports that the actions of his notorious great-uncle, who also made a name for himself as a card-shark and vaudeville manager, hampered the Nazi’s war preparations. close
