Reed O. Smoot Papers
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2016 LCV Cities Tour” in Provo, Utah, from June 4-9 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2.

Ryan Lee talked about Senator Reed O. Smoot (R-UT) and showed items from Senator Smoot’s papers, housed in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University. Reed Smoot was elected to the Senate in 1903, and his religious affiliation prompted a congressional inquiry by the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections. The collection includes Senator Smoot’s personal diaries, items related to the hearings, correspondence with U.S. presidents, and photographs.
