House Republicans had been planning to allow a vote on gun control legislation after the June 12, 2016, mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, but some majority party members objected to the bill, so the vote was delayed. During one-minute speeches, House Democrats called for consideration of gun control legislation. Then, members debated the rules governing three bills. One would make it easier for judges to throw out federal regulations. Another would allow people to buy over-the- counter drugs with money from health savings accounts. The third was a spending bill for the IRS and Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), federal courts, and other parts of the government. Democrats used their debate remarks to discuss gun violence.  close
