He said the situation remained “precarious,” and announced that the U.S. would maintain 8,400 troops in Afghanistan through the end of his presidency with a continued focus on training and advising the Afghan military. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford were in attendance. close
