The Republican National Committee met in Cleveland to draft and vote on the party’s platform for the 2016 elections. An openly gay member of the committee tearfully urged the party to evolve and called on them not to exclude the gay community. Her amendment, that was voted down, called for more supportive language in platform toward the LGBT community. The Washington, D.C., delegate is the committee’s first openly gay member. Other topics discussed in this portion of the hearing included marijuana legalization and striking out repetitive language in the draft subcommittee reports. The National Convention will be held July 18-21 in Cleveland. close
