Senators McConnell (R-KY), Reid (D-NV), and Durbin (D-IL) spoke about Zika virus funding and opioid abuse legislation. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised the work on the opioid abuse legislation and said he looked forward to passage. He also asked the Democrats to support Zika virus prevention legislation, saying they were responding to the president’s request to fund prevention efforts. Minority Leader Harry Reid criticized Republicans for filling up the Zika legislation with Planned Parenthood provisions, and for shifting of some Ebola virus prevention funding. Senator Durbin blamed House Repulbicans for blocking a bi-partisan Senate compromise that passed with 89 votes.
