National Park Service ranger Matthew Penrod led a tour of Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial, a 19th century mansion situated on the hill above President John F. Kennedy’s grave in Arlington National Cemetery. The house was built by George Washington’s step-grandson as a memorial to the Revolutionary War hero, but it became known during the Civil War for its association with Robert E. Lee, who had married into the family. It is the most visited historic home in the National Park Service system, which is marking its centennial this year. Arlington House will close at the end of 2016 for a year-long restoration made possible by a $12.35 million gift from philanthropist David Rubenstein. close
