Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johson became the first sitting cabinet secretary to address the convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) as he spoke about the journey of a group into joining American society, using his grandfather as an example. Honorary guests Ghazala and Khizr Khan were presented with a special award. They were the Pakistani-American parents of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan who was killed in Iraq. They were criticized by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump when they spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Then Azhar Azeez gave the “State of ISNA Address.”
