Friends, colleagues and family members of the late U.S. Representative Mark Takai (D-HI) gathered for a memorial service in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Some of the dignitaries who shared their stories of him were Vice President Joe Biden who called him a man of dignity and courage. Also giving remarks were House Speaker Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, members of the Hawaiian congressional delegation and Representative Takai’s widow Sami. There was a ukulele performance of “Aloha 'Oe.” The first-term representative died July 20, 2016, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 49. close
