President Obama designated the nation’s first marine national monument in the Atlantic Ocean. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument covers an area of 4,913 square miles off the coast of New England and will be protected from commercial activity and development. He talked about this and other issues relating to marine conservation at a State Department meeting called the “Our Oceans Conference.” The president was introduced by Secretary of State John Kerry. close
