A House subcommittee discussed immigration enforcement in New Orleans with a panel of Louisiana state officials and Department of Justice representatives. Witnesses answered questions on the local and federal role in enforcing so-called “sanctuary cities,” which are cities around the country that have policies to shelter undocumented immigrants. Other topics included the current state of race relations, gun violence, community policing and how this issue was playing out in the presidential campaign. Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) said this hearing was based on “a Donald Trump talking point.” close
