More than 300 members of the United Kingdom’s youth parliament, ages 11 to 18, gathered in the British House of Commons for their annual debate of five topics being considered for their national campaign. During this part of the debate, youth parliament members debated lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 years old. Many argued that the current voting age leaves a critical voting bloc out of key elections, like Brexit*. Several youth members also compared the results of the U.S. presidential election and Brexit. House of Commons Speaker John Bercow presided over the session.

*The proposal that the United Kingdom leave the European Union was dubbed “Brexit.” The proposal was approved by a referendum vote June 22, 2016, close
