Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley were part of a discussion on Middle East politics and security. As co-chairs of the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Strategy Task Force (MEST) they had commissioned the report, Real Security: The Interdependence of Governance and Stability in the Arab World, being launched that day. Joined by Amr Hamzawy and the report’s author, Tamara Cofman Wittes, they talked about what they called “breakdowns” in governance in several countries in the Arab world, and offered their proposals for promoting stability and trust between the citizenry and their governments.
