President Obama awarded 21 recipients the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. The award presented each year to individuals for their contributions to national security, world peace, and cultural endeavors.
The 2016 honorees were former NBA players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan; radio broadcaster Vin Scully; economist and Miami Dade College president Eduardo Padrón; comedian Ellen DeGeneres; physicist Richard Garwin; artist Maya Linn; attorney Newt Minnow, who served as the Federal Communications Commission chair; mathematician and computer scientist Margaret Hamilton; architect Frank Gehry; actors Cicely Tyson, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and Robert Redford; “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels; philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates; and singers Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross. Blackfeet tribal community leader Elouise Cobell and computer coder Grace Hopper, who created the first compiler, were give the award posthumously. close
