The 2016 honorees were former NBA players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan; radio broadcaster Vin Scully; economist and Miami Dade College president Eduardo Padrón; comedian Ellen DeGeneres; physicist Richard Garwin; artist Maya Linn; attorney Newt Minnow, who served as the Federal Communications Commission chair; mathematician and computer scientist Margaret Hamilton; architect Frank Gehry; actors Cicely Tyson, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and Robert Redford; “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels; philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates; and singers Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross. Blackfeet tribal community leader Elouise Cobell and computer coder Grace Hopper, who created the first compiler, were give the award posthumously.
