Ronald Shafer talked about The Carnival Campaign: How the Rollicking 1840 Campaign of “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too” Changed Presidential Elections Forever. His book details then-candidate William Henry Harrison, a Whig, and his successful campaign against incumbent President Martin Van Buren, a Democrat. Mr. Shafer said that before this election in which President Harrison held rallies and gave speeches, presidential candidates “sat at home” and “wrote letters to people who write you about the issues.” Among other topics, he also talked about President Harrison’s family and life before becoming president, what led to his death after only one month in office, what the Whig and Democratic Parties were like at the time, and parallels between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the 1840 campaign. close
