Following the United Nations Security Council debate and passage of a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power explained why the U.S. was the only country to abstain from the vote while the rest of the council voted in favor. The U.S. was under pressure from Israel to veto the resolution. Ambassador Power reiterated the U.S. view that such Israeli settlements were “illegitimate” but called on fellow U.N. member states to treat Israel equally as a member of the international community.
