Former Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) testified before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on his nomination to be energy secretary in the Trump administration. When asked about comments he made during his presidential bid about wanting to eliminate the Department of Energy, the nominee said after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the agency, he regretted his statement. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pressed Mr. Perry on his past comments about global warming and climate change not being real, asking several times if the nominee believes climate change is a global crisis and whether he would commit to transforming the nation’s energy system. Mr. Perry said he thinks the climate is changing and that he has a record on defending the climate as governor. close
