The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee met in executive session to consider President Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos to be the education secretary. Senators debated her nomination for more than an hour before holding a roll call vote. Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) called into question the validity of the 12-11 vote in favor of Mrs. DeVos' confirmation because Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) voted by proxy. Committee Chair Lamar Alexander (R-TN) put the committee into a 10-minute recess to gather more information on the panel’s rules for voting by proxy on nominations. close
