The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee returned from a recess of its executive session to consider President Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos to be the education secretary. After a lengthy debate over whether members could cast a vote in favor of the nomination by proxy, Committee Chair Lamar Alexander (R-TN) called for a revote, which resulted in a 12-11 vote in favor of reporting Mrs. DeVos’s nomination favorably to the entire Senate. Following the vote, several Democratic members talked about their opposition to the DeVos nomination. After the the committee adjourned, Chair Alexander responded to some questions from reporters. close
