Representatives from The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced they were moving the minute hand of their “Doomsday Clock” from three minutes until midnight to 2 1/2 minutes until midnight. Since 1947 a team of Nobel laureates at the publication has been compiling research and analysis to set their metaphorical clock, the hands of which they move closer to midnight when the group believes the world is moving closer to catastrophic events. It was the first time the clock was moved only 30 seconds, but it brought it closer to midnight that it had been since during the Cold War in 1953. A variety of reasons were cited for the move, including global nuclear security concerns, the threat of climate change, and emerging cyber and biological technology. The panelists responded to questions from reporters at the National Press Club. close
