Three representatives of civil rights organizations and an official of the Reagan administration’s Department of Justice discussed the nomination of Lani Guinier as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. President Clinton withdrew Ms. Guinier’s name from nomination the previous Thursday rather than face a fight for her confirmation against Senate conservatives.
