Inspectors general (IGs) from various federal agencies testified at a hearing on challenges facings their positions, including existing staff vacancies. Ranking Member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) asked the witnesses about reports of the Trump transition team notifying inspectors general on January 13, 2017, that they were “being held over on a temporary basis.” Homeland Security IG John Roth and Justice Department IG Michael Horowitz provided first hand accounts, saying they were surprised and concerned by the calls but were later told to disregard them. Under the Inspector General Act of 1978, all IGs must be selected without regard to political affiliation. Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) addressed the issue saying the White House told him the phone calls to IGs were a mistake. close
