Officials from the Office of Personnel Management, the National Background Investigations Bureau, and the Defense Department testified at a hearing on information technology security and the security clearance process. Committee members asked the witnesses questions on the progress of ongoing projects to encrypt and further protect federal employee data from breaches such as one that occurred in 2015 that compromised millions of employee and applicant records. Committee members also argued amongst themselves over whether the committee should investigate the hacking of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee email servers during the 2016 election. close
