Christy Coleman talked about the controversies over Civil War monuments and memorials. Introductory remarks were made by S. Waite Rawls for the all-day symposium on the past, present, and future of Civil War monuments, addressing the history of their construction in the North and South, and how public perception, especially of Confederate monuments, had changed.

“Monuments, Markers, Museums, and the Landscape of Civil War Memory” was the opening session of the American Civil War Museum’s 2017 annual symposium, “Lightning Rods of Controversy: Civil War Monuments Past, Present, and Future.” It was co-sponsored by the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia and The Library of Virginia. close
