Alia Malek talked about her book The Home That Was Our Country: A Memoir of Syria, in which she discusses the lives and struggles of the people, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Armenians, and Kurds, living in her grandmother’s apartment building in Damascus, Syria. Her family abandoned the apartment in the 1970s after Hafez al-Assad came to power, but Ms. Malek returned to Syria to live there from 2011-2013. She was interviewed by NPR’s Leila Fadel. close
