Colonial Economics in the Cape Fear Region

Jan Davidson gave a tour of the “Cape Fear Stories” at the Cape Fear Museum. The exhibit explores the history of Wilmington and North Hanover County, North Carolina. Ms. Davidson said that when colonists arrived the region was densely populated with long leaf pine trees, which were used to

create tar. She also explained how tar production became and important part of the area’s economy and led to Wilmington becoming the largest city in North Carolina prior to the Civil War.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2017 LCV Cities Tour” in Wilmington, North Carolina, from February 18-24 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Charter Communications cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
