Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center Opening Ceremony State and local officials delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Dorchester County, Maryland. Speakers commemorated the abolitionist, humanitarian, and Civil War spy Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1822. She escaped in 1849 but returned to the area many times to assist her family and others in their escape to freedom. The Maryland Park Service and the National Park Service partnered to create the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. close
