The Detroit Rebellion, also known as 12th Street Riot, began on July 23, 1967 following a police raid on an unlicensed bar in a predominantly African-American neighborhood. The National Guard and U.S. Army troops were called in to quell what became the largest civil disturbance of 20th century America. This panel took place at the Organization of American Historians annual meeting. close
